Afrique mon désir (meaning Africa my longing/Afrika my verlange) is a 90-minute multi-media world music production, directed by David Kramer, featuring Laurinda Hofmeyr, Schalk Joubert and the Afrique mon désir Ensemble, presented by the Cape Town Music Academy (CTMA)

Legendary musical theatre director, David Kramer, joins forces with the multi-award-winning South African singer and composer, Laurinda Hormeyr, famous for setting music to poetry, and bassist and musical producer, Schalk Joubert.

Together with a world-class ensemble of West African singers and musicians, they explore a wealth of African poetry, from Francophone Madagascar to Mauritania, Senegal to Chad, and all the way back to South African shores, with the Afrikaans poetry of Breyten Breytenbach, Eugène Marais and Antjie Krog. This literary feast combines the written word with African inspired melodies and rhythms to produce an energetic multi-media production titled Afrique mon désir.

Mesmerising animation films, created by award-winning South African artist Diek Grobler, accompany the music, making this production a unique audio and visual experience, presented in French, Afrikaans and other African lanugages.

Afrique mon désir explores themes of longing, displacement and a deep, shared connection between the African continent and its people.

  • CTMA is a not for profit company (NPC) that seeks to create opportunities for local established and emerging musicians and related artists in the Western Cape. The objective of the CTMA is to conduct a public benefit activity which creates programmes and projects for the promotion of the work of local musicians and the development of career opportunities in the South African music industry.

History

The first Leesfees was part of Prince Albert’s 250 year celebrations (November 2012). That year we celebrated Karoo writers and poets. The intimacy of a festival where guests could attend every event, with no rushing from venue to venue, had such appeal that the team now hosts a Leesfees every year. The theme for 2017 is The Soul of the Karoo, acknowledging the creative spirit which infuses the Karoo and which has provided inspiration since the days of the Khoisan.
